World food award
Indian-American Soil Scientist Dr. Ratan Lal has recently been awarded the prestigious 'World Food Prize', considered to be equivalent to the Nobel Prize in Agriculture. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo praised his research in soil science and said that he is helping millions of small farmers around the world.
The World Food Awards Foundation said in a statement on 11 June 2020 that Dr. Lal spread the four continents and over 50 decades of his career by promoting innovative techniques of preserving soil quality for the livelihood of more than 50 crore small farmers Has benefited.
Why was the World Food Award given?
He has been awarded this award for contributing to increase the global food supply by helping small farmers to improve soil quality. Ratan Lal will receive a prize of US $ 250,000.

Soil scientist Dr. Ratan Lal said that I am very happy to receive the World Food Award for the year 2020. I had the special opportunity and honor to work for farmers around the world. Ratan Lal is the founding director of the Center for Carbon Management and Sequestration at Ohio State University (OSU).
About Doctor Ratan Lal
Dr. Ratan Lal is currently Professor of Soil Science at Ohio State University and is the founding director of the University's Center for Carbon Management and Separation. Dr. Ratan Lal was born in 1944 in Karayal, West Punjab, which is now in Pakistan. In 1947, when India got independence, Lal's family started living as refugees in Rajaund in Haryana. Ratan Lal completed his early education from the Punjab Agricultural University and did his MSc from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in Delhi.
This award has been given since 1987
This award is being given by the American organization World Food Prize Foundation 1987. His commendation states that he has contributed to four continents. His techniques have benefitted more than 50 crores of farmers in their livelihood and more than two billion people have improved their efforts to make a solid system of food and nutrition. These techniques save millions of crores of hectares of natural tropical ecological system.
About the World Food Awards
The World Food Prize was established in 1986 by Nobel Peace Prize winner Norman Borlaug. The Foundation is located in Des Moines, Iowa, USA and the first winner of this award is Indian Agricultural Scientist Dr. MS Swaminathan who was awarded in the year 1987. MS Swaminathan is considered the father of India's Green Revolution.
