india can once again become the non permanent member of UNSC

India may be re-elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) during the elections to be held in June 2020.  India has been assured of winning the Asia Pacific seat, as India will be the only contender from the region.
India's candidature for the Asia Pacific seat in the non-permanent category was unanimously endorsed by the 55-member Asia Pacific Group including Pakistan and China in the year 2019.  The name of India for the non-permanent UNSC seat was proposed by the Asia Pacific countries for a full two years, by the year term, 2021-2022.
 UNSC Election
 • The UNSC will be elected on June 17 to elect five non-permanent members of the 15-member Security Council for the term 2021-22.  The dates were announced on 1 June 2020 as France became the President of the Council of 15 Nations for the month of June.

India is the only candidate for non-permanent seat from Asia-Pacific seat for the term 2021-22. Canada, Ireland and Norway will contest for two seats for the category of Western Europe and other countries. Mexico is the only candidate from Latin America and Caribbean seat.
Kenya and Djibouti will contest for non-permanent seats from African countries.
Even before this, India was selected as non-permanent member of UNSC several times in the years
 1950 - 1951
1967 - 1968
1972 - 1973
1977 - 1978
1984 - 1985
1991 - 1992
From now on in the year 2011–2012, India was selected as a non-permanent member of the UNSC.

 • Keeping in view the restrictions imposed due to the outbreak of Kovid-19, the United Nations General Assembly decided last week to conduct the UNSC election under the new voting system.

 How are UNSC elections held?

UNSC elections are held in the hall of the United Nations General Assembly where all 193 member countries of the United Nations cast their votes through secret ballot.

 The background

India has been demanding reforms in the UN Security Council for a long time, saying 'India deserves a permanent seat in the UN Security Council'.

 About UNSC

 • Currently UNSC has only five - United States, United Kingdom, Russia, China and France - permanent member countries using veto power.

 • This council also has 10 non-permanent members and every year the United Nations General Assembly elects 5 non-permanent members for a two-year term.

 • These 10 non-permanent seats are divided on regional basis -

 - Five seats for African and Asian states

 - Two seats for Latin American and Caribbean states

 - Two seats for Western European and other states

 - A seat for Eastern European states.

 • Earlier this month, five countries including Vietnam, Niger, Estonia, Tunisia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines were selected for UNSC for a two-year term starting in January 2020.  St. Vincent and the Grenadines are the smallest nation to secure a UNSC seat.

 • Currently, UNSC includes Germany, Belgium, Cote d'Ivoire, Dominican Republic, Equatorial Guinea, South Africa, Indonesia, Kuwait, Peru and Poland as 10 non-permanent members.
